Microstructure

The specimens were examined under microscope, so photomicrographs could be taken and thus the microstructure can be interpreted. From this, the presence of various components can be identified, and thus, the properties of the steel can be predicted.

The specimens had to be prepared before microscopic examination. Specimens were cut along their diameter and along their length, mounted in Bakelite and polished down, furnishing with 1 micron diamond paste. Full details of this preparation process and the equipment used is found in the report.

The microscope available is a Zeiss model. It is fitted with equipment capable of taking digital images of the microstructure. It is fitted with objectives of x5, 10, 20, 50 and 100, and has a small mounted stage to allow 2 dimensional movement of the specimen while mounted.
